For most people, change can be a bit scary, especially for the school age kids. When I was 12, my family threw everything in a moving van and headed 3000 miles west from Washington D.C. to the Bay Area. Each of us in the family experienced the move in different ways and had different stressors. In my years living in all different areas within Silicon Valley I have helped numerous people and families with this transition. Using my experiences as a child and a realtor, helping people make that transition has become one of my passions. Let’s take a look at some of the stress points and how we can help you reduce or eliminate them.

Is Silicon Valley the place for me?

Silicon Valley is an idea as much as it is a place. It is full of dynamic people, places and things. Truly defining it can be difficult if not impossible. From a geographical perspective, it encompasses the northern half of Santa Clara County in the south bay, the southern half of San Mateo County along the San Francisco Peninsula, and even some areas of the east bay. It seems to expand every year as more and more companies open their headquarters here. If you are looking for a job in the Biotech, you will most likely be looking in the area along the peninsula just south of San Francisco, often times called Biotech Alley. While technically not part of Silicon Valley, it is bordered by Silicon Valley to the south and San Francisco to the North.

Within Silicon Valley’s nebulous borders are numerous cities and climates that suit just about every lifestyle. From small town rural to big city excitement and everything in between, Silicon Valley has a place for you. Worried about identifying that perfect place to live…well that is what we’re here for icon smile Custom Relocation Services .

  • We recommend you take at least one and preferably two visits here to determine if our area is right for you and your family. There is a lot of information to process and a large geographic area to explore. We will help you narrow your focus by determining which areas are best suited to your lifestyle and budget. We will even prepare custom tours for you and your family.

Can I afford to live in Silicon Valley?

That is a tough question to answer and it is so individual that is near impossible to answer without more specific details. Being able to afford housing is by far and away the #1 concern people have when moving here. Homes are expensive here, and they are getting more and more expensive by the day. Homes range in price from $200,000 to $100 Million Dollars. That is quite a range and probably not helpful at all. If you are looking for a nicely updated 3 bed/2 bath 1500 sq/ft home with good schools, you are going to have to spend at least $1,200,000. Gas, food and just about everything else is more expensive here than in most other places in the US. Of course, corresponding salaries are also much higher as well. One thing you will most likely have to compromise on is land. Most homes here are on lots between 5,000 and 10,000 sq/ft. You can find bigger lots, but you are either going to spend a lot of money or you are going to be further away from population centers likely adding to your daily commute.

  • As part of our services, we provide a Cost of Living Analysis that compares your current city to cities here in the bay area. This will help you determine the salary you will need to receive here in order to maintain your current standard of living. Often times, the amount you can sell your current home for will determine what you can afford on this end. As a Sotheby’s International Realty Agent, I have access to some of the most talented and successful agents in over 50 countries around the world. I would be happy to refer you to an excellent local agent that can help you determine the value of your current home.

How will I find a place to Live?

This is far and away the #1 stressor to moving. It is the question I get asked first more often than all of the rest combined. Silicon Valley is made up of hundreds of neighborhoods all offering something a bit different. Even within a single city, you can have 5 or 6 different price points and lifestyle choices. When you spread that out over 15 different cities, it can feel overwhelming. That is where we come in.

  • It begins with an honest conversation about what is important to you and your family. We will collect and analyze your answers and put together a custom tour of specific neighborhoods that fit your families specific wants, needs and desires. We will provide you with material to read prior to your trip so you are not coming in cold turkey and have a basis to build your opinions on. Once we have completed our tour, you should have a pretty good idea of your options and their price points. After identifying some areas that appeal to you, we can keep you updated on home buying and renting trends. Often times, it is advisable to rent at first in order to get to know an area. On the other hand, putting down roots by purchasing a home can help with family transitions and begin your immersion into your new community. Every person and family is a bit different and our job is to educate you so you can make the best decision for you and your family.

Will my significant other find it difficult to find work?

The diversity of opportunity in Silicon Valley provides a vibrant job market for just about any occupation you can think of. Historically, the job market here has been very good. Even during the global economic turmoil of the recent past, the job market here remained strong. Silicon Valley is anchored by Stanford University and venture capital money. When highly educated innovators have access to large sums of money, an environment that spins out constant streams of new companies is created. For every Google, Facebook or Oracle here, there are hundreds of other companies doing creative and inspiring work in Silicon Valley. We have world class hospitals, schools and other places of employment throughout the region.

  • To help you, we have put together a great group of recruiters who specialize in matching motivated people with great job opportunities. We will introduce you to industry and job specific recruiters that will help your significant other find that perfect job.

How will we acclimate the kids to their new environment?

This is a concern of every parent who moves their family anywhere. Kids, like all of us, will be anxious with any move. They will hate leaving their friends and their school….their comfort zone. Once you have narrowed your search down to a few cities, we recommend you bring them out for a visit if you can. Let’s take them to visit the schools, ball fields and maybe even stop for an ice cream downtown after school gets out so they can see the kids walking around. Giving them this knowledge and experience will go far in reducing their fears. Actually, kids tend to acclimate themselves to new environments better than we adults.

  • We have put together a list of Mothers Clubs, Youth Sports Organizations, Dance Studios and more that you can share with your child and use to help them get acclimated to their new city. Once you move in, you will have all the information you need to get your child out making friends and getting active in their community.

Moving is scary, messy and no fun for just about everybody. We are here to help you with moving checklists, hints and tips on everything from selecting a moving company to hiring a concierge company to unpack you once you get here.
